Making your own air freshener is not hard, in fact it is down right easy and only takes a few minutes. The best thing about it is, other than the savings is the Health benefits! Seriously, have you ever thought about what is in the air fresheners? It is almost overwhelming when you walk down "that" aisle in the store, so many "scents" but are they all that they claim to be? Take a look at this before you buy that next can of "fill in the name brand" air freshener.
- A recent investigation of 14 common air fresheners by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found hormone-disrupting chemicals known as phthalates in 12 products, including some fresheners marketed as "all-natural" and "unscented." None of the air fresheners listed phthalates on their labels.(Nice - sarcasm noted)
- Phthalates are known to interfere with hormone and testosterone production.
- known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm
- In addition to phthalates, air fresheners may contain allergens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde.
- Above information taken from NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) you can find the full reports on the brands here and the contents reports here
Is it any wonder why we have Asthma, Reproductive problems, Cancer and an increase in children being born with attention / behaviour disorders??? And to think in our ignorance and the manufacturers "non" truth in labeling they have been taking our hard earned money and helping us to poison our families!
So Lets get started saving money, detoxing our air and homes. Our health with thank us!
All Natural Air freshener ~ A green, frugal & healthy alternative!
What you will need:
1 Spray Bottle - any garden variety will do with adj. nozzle
16 oz. Water
15-20 drops Essential oils of your choice * Make sure you have "therapeutic grade" essential oils
1 tsp. Baking soda
Put the water in your bottle add in the baking soda and shake well till mixed. Add in your essential oils, put on the top. Shake well before each use as the oil will float back to the top. That's it!! Spray away your smells, colds, flu, anxiety ~ the list just goes on! Use the fine mist on your sprayer as you walk through your home / office. I also spray a more coarse spray on my air filters. I spray down my couch cushions, pillow & blankets - I even spray around my dogs bed to help ward off any fleas that may have hitched a ride inside.
You have so many options: Depending on what you are in the mood for, what your favorite scent is or what healing properties (yes that is an added bonus) you have need of. Here are some blends below for you that I use. All of my Essential oils are Therapeutic grade - 100% pure.
Lavender - soothing, calming and relaxing
Rose - Just because I love the smell a LOT but - anti depressant, anti phlogistic, anti septic, anti spasmodic, anti viral, aphrodisiac
Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Peppermint & Lemon - Great for colds, flu, head & chest congestion. Rosemary also helps with focus and memory. They all have Antibacterial, antiviral and anti fungal properties.
Clove, Patchouli & Orange oil - Memory focus and brain stimulation, tension and anxiety relief - smells wonderful
Sandalwood, Cedarwood & Orange - more of a musky earthy smell - great for concentration and mood enhancing
Cinnamon & clove - Smells like you are baking :0) something wonderful
Frankinscence - Increased brain activity, helps brain to rewrite old patterns.
