Toothpaste - Homemade & Whitening
Homemade toothpaste is one of those things that has about as many variations online as brands you can buy in the store. I think for the majority of us, it becomes a matter of personal preference, what you are looking for the end result to do for you and what items you already have on hand. Other than the essential oils, Most of the items you already have on hand and it takes only a few minutes to whip up a batch which will last you about month for only pennies. Compare that to $3.00-$6.00 per tube for the commercial toothpaste that is FULL of chemicals, most of which you cannot pronounce and the choice becomes pretty obvious!
Homemade Whitening Toothpaste
I have tried a couple of different variations on my journey to finding "my" perfect homemade toothpaste. I want vitamins good for my teeth. I want it to provide protection and healing for my gums. I want it to get my teeth clean and free from stains while not ruining my enamel. I want it to TASTE GOOD! Since most home remedies start with the tried and true ingredients of baking soda and peroxide the taste good part is what is always a challenge. After months of researching (off and on of course, I do have a life...... well kinda ;) ) I tweaked a few different recipes and combined them to create a most pleasant surprise to my taste buds tonight! Here is what I used and it literally took less than 5 minutes!
4 TBS Organic Coconut oil
5 TBS Baking Soda (arm & hammer brand)
3 drops Vitamin E oil
3 drops of Spearmint Essential oil - 100% pure
3 drops of Tea Tree Essential oil - 100 % pure
3 drops of Clove Essential oil - 100% pure
1 Tsp Hydrogen Peroxide
4 packets of Stevia for sweetening
Melt the Coconut oil over low heat - keeping it warm for a few minutes just to make sure to kill any bacteria that may be in your saucepan. I always wash my utensils in hot soapy water and rinse again prior to using them as well as my small container that I use to store my paste in.
Remove from heat and add in the baking soda and stevia and stir to mix. Now add in the rest of the ingredients and stir to mix real well. I add the peroxide last as it will make the mixture paste up quickly because of the coolness. Put into your container and try it out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at not only how well it cleans your teeth, but the whitening power of it as well! The tea tree oil is great for your gums AND is also used for upper respiratory issues so if you are a seasonal allergy sufferer you will Definitely benefit from this more than just brushing your teeth. :)
The benefits of the ingredients listed above are:
Coconut oil - Antifungul, Antibacterial and Antivirul - Cardiovascular health, burn calories faster, stops absorption of poisons in the system.
Vitamin E Oil - Heart health, skin regeneration, antioxidant, anti-inflamatory & kills free radicals. This vitamin is one that is absorbed whether you swallow it or not, rub it on your skin or brush your teeth!
Spearmint Essential oil - Antibacterial, Bad breath, Cold & Flu symptoms, Fever reducer, Stress reliever, Pain reliever, digestion problems, Shock, vertigo & dizziness (A 2001 study by H. Imai and colleagues in "Microbios" found that spearmint essential oil blocked the growth of bacteria, even antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including H. pylori, Salmonella, E.coli and MRSA. Add 20 to 40 drops spearmint oil to 3.5 oz. water in a spray bottle to use as a cleaning solution.)
Tea tree Essential oil - Fights Gingivitis and that is only the Beginning! Antimicrobial and Antiinflamatory - there is not much that this wonder oil cannot do! Great for the upper respiratory system as well.
Clove Essential oil - anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and pain-relieving effects, often used for relief of dry socket and nerve pain in teeth.
